On January 23, 1969, Herman L. Clifford, a 45-year-old assistant principal at Cardozo Senior High School in Washington, D.C., was fatally shot during a confrontation with three individuals who had just robbed the school's bank of $350. The incident occurred in the school's hallway as Clifford attempted to apprehend the perpetrators.
