In the early morning hours of Thursday, November 2, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet of the 3400 block of 14th Street, Northwest, in Washington, D.C. When police arrived at the scene in the Columbia Heights neighborhood around 2:08 a.m., they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of these men was 29-year-old Johansel Encarnacion, a resident of Northeast D.C.
Both victims were immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
For two days, Johansel Encarnacion fought for his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. He succumbed to the gunshot wounds on Saturday, November 4, 2023, and was pronounced dead. His passing left behind a grieving family, including his three young children. His father, Alberto Encarnacion, remembered his son as a young man full of hope and with a future ahead of him, and he has called for justice in the wake of this tragedy.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is actively investigating the shooting that led to Encarnacion's death. At this time, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. In an effort to generate leads, the police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to seek assistance from the public to bring closure to the family of Johansel Encarnacion.
