In the early evening of Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the life of 65-year-old Lance Anthony Holmes, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire in Washington, D.C. Sixth District officers responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 6:40 p.m. and discovered Holmes inside a residence in the 2300 block of S Street, Southeast. He had sustained gunshot wounds and, despite the arrival of emergency personnel, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Details about what led to the incident or a potential motive have not been released to the public. The police have not provided any information regarding whether Mr. Holmes was a resident of the home where he was found. His younger brother, Mark Holmes, stated that his older brother worked as a traveling barber and that he was unaware if he lived at the S Street address.
