In the early morning hours of August 4, 2023, the life of 33-year-old Denzel Greenwood, a male resident of Southeast, DC, was tragically cut short. At approximately 1:27 a.m., the sound of gunshots pierced the night in the 1900 block of 13th Street, Northwest, prompting a response from Third District officers. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Greenwood suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene, but they found no signs of life.
He was pronounced dead at the location, near the U Street Metro station.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately began an investigation into the fatal shooting. While the circumstances leading up to the incident were not immediately clear, his family believes he may have been visiting a club on U Street that evening. They described him as a generous and nice young man who loved people. In the wake of his death, the police department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
For over a year, the case remained under investigation. Then, on November 7, 2024, a significant development occurred. The Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of 25-year-old Jordan Thurman, also of Southeast, DC. Pursuant to a DC Superior Court booking order, Thurman was charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the shooting death of Denzel Greenwood. Following the arrest, the case against Thurman began to move through the court system, where he also faces charges related to other incidents.
