In the early hours of Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the life of 19-year-old Marquis Ward was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Northwest Washington, D.C. The incident occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the 2100 block of 9th Street, Northwest, near Howard University's Plaza Towers. Marquis Ward was a Black male.
Responding to the sound of gunshots, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene to find Ward suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was urgently transported to a local hospital for medical attention, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A second adult male victim was also discovered at the scene with a non-life-threatening graze wound to his finger.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the motive behind the attack remaining unknown. Authorities have indicated that a rifle was used in the assault. While the shooting happened near Howard University, officials have stated that the incident is not believed to be related to the university. The area surrounding the campus, however, has experienced a notable level of crime, causing concern among students.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively seeking information from the public to help identify and locate the person or persons responsible. Investigators are searching for a black SUV that was seen with three individuals inside at the time of the shooting. The department has released surveillance video of the suspect vehicle and is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
