On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., a sequence of events unfolded that tragically ended the life of 19-year-old Demetrius Creek. On Saturday, June 15, 2024, at approximately 9:39 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1400 block of Howard Road, Southeast. Upon their arrival, officers discovered evidence of gunfire, but no victim was present at the scene.
The initial investigation suggested a violent encounter had taken place, leaving an unsettling mystery in its wake.
A short time later, a grim discovery was made a little over a mile away. Members of the Prince George's County Police Department were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in the 2400 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast. Amidst the wreckage, they found an adult male, unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. This individual was identified as Demetrius Creek of Southeast, D.C. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives were able to connect the two incidents, determining that Creek had sustained his fatal injuries at the Howard Road shooting location before being involved in the vehicle collision.
In the weeks that followed, the Metropolitan Police Department actively investigated the homicide, seeking assistance from the public to identify a suspect. Their efforts included the release of surveillance camera footage connected to the case. The investigation culminated on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, when an arrest was made. Pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, 16-year-old Shamard Miller of Washington, D.C., was taken into custody. Miller has been charged as an adult with First Degree Murder While Armed in connection with the death of Demetrius Creek.
