On a tragic afternoon in Little Rock, Arkansas, the life of a promising young man, Joshua Cortez Brown, a 20-year-old Black male, was cut short. The incident unfolded on Monday, May 20, 2024, when officers from the 12th Street Division were dispatched to 2401 South Pulaski Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Brown suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
Joshua, affectionately known as "chocolate drop" to his friends and family, was a 2022 graduate of Southwest High School in Little Rock, where he had been the football team's quarterback. His athletic talents had earned him a scholarship to Arkansas Baptist College for his freshman year, and he had been accepted to Shorter College in North Little Rock for his sophomore year. He was known for his humble spirit and enjoyed playing basketball, video games, and drawing.
The Little Rock Police Department's Homicide Detectives promptly began an investigation into Brown's death. Their efforts, which included canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, led to the identification of suspects. On June 7, 2024, one of the individuals implicated in the shooting, Ryan Frierson, was extradited to Little Rock and served with a warrant for Capital Murder.
Further investigation led to a second arrest. On June 27, 2025, Travis Weston, a 21-year-old from Little Rock, was taken into custody and also charged with Capital Murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Joshua Brown.
