In the autumn of 2023, the life of a promising 21-year-old Black man, Myron Snyder, was tragically cut short in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On the evening of October 5th, Snyder was working, delivering food for DoorDash, a job he undertook with the same dedication he applied to all his endeavors. That night, a delivery to the Pointe Apartments in the northeast part of the city would be his last.
An altercation erupted, the details of which would later be pieced together by law enforcement, culminating in gunfire. In the ensuing violence, Snyder was fatally shot.
Snyder, known for his infectious smile that could illuminate even the darkest of days, was a beloved figure in his community. A graduate of Washington High School, he had been a fixture at the Boys & Girls Club since he was a young boy, eventually becoming a mentor and role model to the children there. He was remembered as a funny, bright, and supportive young man with a big heart, someone who would go out of his way to help anyone. His death sent ripples of grief through his family and the many lives he had touched.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Cameron Leonard. During his trial, it was revealed that an argument had broken out between Snyder, Leonard, and Leonard’s brother, Maurice Brown, who was also killed in the incident. Leonard claimed he acted in self-defense, a narrative the jury ultimately rejected. He was found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Myron Snyder.
