An evening of socializing at the Taboo Nightclub & Lounge in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, turned deadly in the early morning hours of April 10, 2022. Inside the crowded venue, where about 100 to 150 people were gathered, a barrage of gunfire erupted, causing chaos as patrons scrambled for safety. When the shooting ceased, two individuals lay dead, and ten others were wounded.
One of the deceased was a 25-year-old Black / African American male named Michael Valentine.
Cedar Rapids police were already outside the nightclub responding to a different matter when they witnessed a sudden rush of people fleeing the establishment. Investigators quickly determined the shooting was not a random act of violence but a targeted incident. They believed there was more than one shooter and that Michael Valentine was the intended victim of the attack. The hail of bullets, estimated to be between one to two dozen shots, also claimed the life of 35-year-old Nicole Owens.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led police to identify a suspect, Dimione Walker. Evidence presented during the subsequent trial suggested a history of violence between Walker and Valentine. The defense claimed that Valentine had shot Walker in a previous incident years earlier. This history was presented as a potential motive for the nightclub shooting.
In November 2022, a jury found Dimione Walker guilty for his role in the fatal shooting. He was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Michael Valentine, as well as charges of going armed with intent and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction brought a measure of resolution to the violent episode that cut short the life of Michael Valentine.
