In the spring of 2021, the life of 26-year-old Davvion Izael Flemings, a Black / African American male, was cut short in a burst of violence on a Thursday evening in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On April 15th, at approximately 9:38 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of the 1600 block of 32nd Street N.E. Calls flooded the city's Joint Communications Center, with some witnesses reporting the chilling sight of at least two individuals fleeing a residence and speeding away in a vehicle.
When Cedar Rapids Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Flemings behind a vehicle parked in a driveway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services, including Area Ambulance Service and the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, joined the police in rendering aid, but his injuries proved fatal. Davvion Izael Flemings was pronounced dead at approximately 10:00 p.m.
Investigators at the scene located shell casings in the backyard of the home, near a garage, suggesting the targeted nature of the attack. In the immediate aftermath, authorities withheld the victim's name pending notification of his family. Five days later, on April 20, 2021, the Cedar Rapids Police Department publicly identified the victim as Davvion I. Flemings. At that time, they announced that no arrests had been made and that the homicide investigation was actively ongoing.
