In the early hours of May 18, 2019, the lives of a group of teenagers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were irrevocably shattered in a burst of senseless violence. Among them was Royal Abram, an 18-year-old Black / African American male, who was seated in a vehicle with friends in the parking lot of the Iowa Smoke Shop. What should have been an ordinary night out became a scene of tragedy when a man approached their car and opened fire.
The sudden and brutal attack left Abram and his friend, 18-year-old Matrell Johnson, dead from gunshot wounds. Two other friends in the car, Booker McKinney and Kayla Panos-Blackcloud, were critically injured but survived.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led authorities to 26-year-old Andre Richardson. Surveillance footage from the smoke shop was pivotal, capturing the shooter getting out of a vehicle, firing into the teenagers' car with a handgun, and then fleeing. This footage helped police identify Richardson as the primary suspect. He was considered armed and dangerous, prompting a manhunt that concluded with his arrest in June 2019. Another individual, 24-year-old Alexandra Lanee Nicole Smith, was identified as the driver of the getaway vehicle and was also taken into custody.
During the legal proceedings, the motive behind the tragic shooting came to light. Richardson claimed his actions were a result of mistaken identity. He had seen a Facebook post earlier that evening and wrongly believed the vehicle at the smoke shop was connected to a previous incident. In a fateful error, he grabbed a gun and shot into the car without knowing who the occupants were. In June 2020, Richardson pleaded guilty to a slew of charges, including two counts of second-degree murder. On September 30, 2020, he was sentenced to a prison term of up to 75 years, with a mandatory minimum of 35 years. Smith was convicted of being an accessory after the fact. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice, but for the families of Royal Abram and Matrell Johnson, it could never undo the profound loss of two young lives cut short.
