Cristian "C.J." Upah, a 17-year-old from Marion, Iowa, was fatally shot on May 10, 2023, in Cedar Rapids. The incident occurred when Upah and his girlfriend, Mia Updegraff, 19, went to the 3500 block of Oakland Road NE to sell vape cartridges to someone Upah knew from school, who was later identified as Keyun McGowan. McGowan, also 17, had arranged the meeting over Snapchat under the alias "Jackson."
