Summary based on 11 sources
On June 18, 2020, a gathering in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, turned tragic, ending the life of 20-year-old Malik James Sheets of Marion. The young Black / African American man, a student at the University of Iowa, was attending a party when violence erupted, leading to his fatal shooting. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into the death of Malik Sheets led authorities to two teenagers from Cedar Rapids. One of the individuals identified and prosecuted was 18-year-old Christian Emedi. He was charged in connection with the murder of Sheets. Rather than proceeding to a full trial on the initial charges, Emedi entered a plea to a lesser charge related to the fatal shooting. This plea agreement resulted in a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.

A second teenager, Marshawn Jeffries, also from Cedar Rapids, was implicated in the events surrounding the shooting. While he was charged in connection with Sheets' death, his legal resolution took a different path. Jeffries pleaded guilty to a charge of obstruction of justice, indicating a role that was not as direct as the primary shooter.

The legal proceedings for both teenagers concluded in January 2022, when they were sentenced for their respective roles in the incident that led to the death of Malik Sheets. The sentencings brought a measure of accountability for the tragic loss of a young life.
