On the evening of October 5, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 3900 block of Sherman Street NE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the parking lot of The Pointe at Cedar Rapids apartment complex, three men were discovered with numerous gunshot wounds. Two of them, 21-year-old Maurice Brown and another 21-year-old, Myron Snyder, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third individual, 25-year-old Cameron A.
Leonard, was also seriously injured in the altercation.
The investigation that followed revealed a complex and tragic sequence of events. It was determined that Myron Snyder was at the apartment complex working as a DoorDash delivery driver. An altercation broke out involving Snyder, Brown, and Leonard. Investigators concluded that Brown initiated the shooting, firing at Snyder. Snyder, who was also armed, returned fire, fatally wounding Brown. Subsequently, Cameron Leonard shot and killed Snyder. The investigation led to the arrests of two men in November 2023.
Cameron A. Leonard, who was identified as Brown's brother, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Myron Snyder, along with several other weapons-related charges. Also arrested was 40-year-old Pierre D. Morrow, who was identified as Maurice Brown's stepfather. Morrow faced charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, accessory after the fact, and obstructing prosecution. He was accused of removing Leonard's gun from the crime scene following the shooting.
During his trial, Leonard’s defense team argued that he acted in self-defense. However, prosecutors presented evidence, including a 3D model of the crime scene, to argue that Leonard's intent was to kill. In March 2025, a jury found Cameron Leonard guilty of first-degree murder. He was later sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Pierre Morrow pleaded guilty to being a felon with a firearm for his role in hiding the weapon after the shooting.
