In the quiet hours of a December night in Tucson, Arizona, the life of 31-year-old Hispanic male Jose Hurtado was tragically cut short. On December 2, 2017, Hurtado was found with gunshot wounds in a vehicle on the north side of the city. Officers responded to a report of a shooting and discovered the grim scene. Despite medical efforts, Hurtado succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Hurtado's death led Tucson police to identify two suspects, who were also his nephews: Daniel
Lovio and Adrian Lovio-Hurtado. Within days of the shooting, Daniel Lovio was located and arrested. His brother, Adrian Lovio-Hurtado, was already in custody at the Pima County jail on unrelated charges. The brothers were subsequently charged in connection with the fatal shooting of their uncle.
The case against the two brothers proceeded through the legal system. In May 2019, Daniel Lovio and Adrian Lovio-Hurtado were tried on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. After a seven-day trial, a jury found both men guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder, as well as aggravated assault.
Following their convictions, the brothers were sentenced for their roles in the death of Jose Hurtado. In June 2019, Daniel Lovio received a 16-year prison sentence. His brother, Adrian Lovio-Hurtado, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in the crime that took their uncle's life.
