On a warm evening in Surprise, Arizona, a Fourth of July weekend gathering turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. On July 3, 2022, 38-year-old Carl Dinora was among those who lost their lives in a sudden and unprovoked shooting at a residence near 144th Avenue and Carline Drive. The party, filled with friends and family, was tragically disrupted by a neighbor who had been invited to join the festivities.
The man, identified as 46-year-old Jason Hunt, had been at the gathering for a
short time, engaging in small talk with other guests. After being offered a plate of food, Hunt sat down to eat. Moments later, he stood up, brandished a handgun, and began firing at the people inside the home. The sudden eruption of violence left chaos and devastation in its wake. In the midst of the attack, Carl Dinora and another guest, 41-year-old Conrradito Ochoa Navarro, were fatally wounded.
The motive for Hunt's violent outburst remains a mystery. Witnesses and police have indicated that there was no apparent altercation or argument that preceded the shooting. Hunt, a U.S. Army recruiter who lived across the street, had even posted on social media about his excitement for the Independence Day celebrations just days prior. In a desperate act of self-defense, one of the injured partygoers managed to shoot and kill Hunt, bringing an end to the rampage. Carl Dinora was remembered by his wife as a remarkable man with a contagious laugh who had a gift for making friends with everyone he met.
