In what began as a night out between brothers ended in a fatal confrontation, a 48-year-old man, Jason Pine, was shot and killed in Surprise, Arizona. The male victim’s life was cut short on the night of June 20, 2025, following a heated argument with his younger brother.
The evening had started with the two brothers attending a concert in Tempe, where they had been drinking.
According to statements made to the police, the trouble began at the concert, leading to them being kicked out after Jason Pine allegedly groped women. The conflict between the siblings did not end there, carrying over to an apartment in Surprise.
Inside the Avilla Meadows Apartments, located near Waddell and Reems roads, the argument between Jason and his 45-year-old brother, Justin Pine, escalated. The dispute took a deadly turn when Justin Pine went to his bedroom, retrieved a rifle, and shot his brother. Despite efforts to save him, Jason Pine succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It was Justin who made the 911 call after the shooting.
Police arrived at the apartment complex just after 11 p.m. to find Jason gravely wounded. Justin Pine was taken into custody that night and was later booked into jail. He is facing charges that include second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and disorderly conduct. During legal proceedings, it was mentioned that Justin Pine suffers from multiple medical issues, including stage three kidney disease and major depressive disorder. He expressed to police that he was afraid his brother was going to kill him during their altercation. Authorities have not indicated any other suspects are being sought in connection with the shooting.
