On a warm evening in Surprise, Arizona, a gathering of friends and family turned into a scene of terror and tragedy. Conrradito Ochoa Navarro, a 41-year-old male, was among those enjoying the festivities on July 3, 2022, at a residence near 144th Avenue and Carline Drive. The pleasant atmosphere was shattered when a neighbor, 46-year-old Jason Hunt, arrived.
Hunt initially mingled with the partygoers, engaging in casual conversation and was even given a plate of food.
After a short time, in an act that police would later describe as unprovoked, Hunt stood up, drew a handgun, and began firing at the people inside the home. The sudden eruption of violence left chaos and devastation in its wake.
In the ensuing moments, Conrradito Ochoa Navarro and another guest, 38-year-old Carl Dinora, were fatally wounded. Several other individuals at the party sustained injuries, with four being hospitalized. The rampage ended when one of the injured attendees managed to shoot and kill the assailant, Jason Hunt. Authorities later determined that this individual, along with others who fought back against Hunt, acted in self-defense and in the defense of others.
The motive for the deadly assault remains unclear. Witnesses recounted the terrifying and unexpected nature of the attack, stating that there was no altercation or argument before Hunt began shooting. The Surprise Police Department investigated the complex incident, concluding that it was an isolated event and that all individuals involved had been accounted for. No arrests were made as the sole suspect was deceased at the scene.
