In the late hours of a spring night in Mesa, Arizona, the life of 41-year-old Stephen Young came to a tragic and violent end. On May 26, 2023, Young, a man who had been navigating the challenges of homelessness and mental illness but was reportedly making strides toward a better path, was fatally shot. His death was not an isolated incident but part of a string of violence that gripped the communities of Mesa and Phoenix, leaving a total of four people dead and another injured.
The man
believed to be responsible for this deadly spree is 20-year-old Iren Byers. Byers was taken into custody and subsequently charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Investigators were able to link the various crime scenes through ballistic evidence, with shell casings from the different locations matching a single 9mm handgun. Surveillance footage from multiple locations, including a light rail train and a convenience store, also captured images of Byers near the scenes of the shootings, wearing the same clothing described by witnesses.
According to authorities, Stephen Young's final hours were spent in the company of his alleged killer. The two reportedly met at a Circle K convenience store and then rode the light rail together. In his confession to police, Byers stated that after they exited the train, a disagreement arose over drugs. Byers claimed that he wanted to smoke marijuana, while Young expressed a desire for fentanyl. Following this disagreement, Byers admitted to shooting Young in the head. Young's sister, however, disputes the claim that her brother used fentanyl.
After his arrest for trespassing, Byers cooperated with detectives from both the Mesa and Phoenix police departments, confessing to all five shootings. He also led them to the location of the clothing he wore during the attacks and the handgun used, which were recovered from his residence after a search warrant was executed. Court documents later revealed that a possible motive for the string of violent attacks was the suspect's anger toward individuals who used drugs, as most of the victims were experiencing homelessness.
