In the autumn of 1973, the life of 21-year-old Kenneth Unrein was tragically cut short in Mesa, Arizona, marking another chapter in a horrifying saga of violence that stretched across two states. His death was not an isolated incident but a part of a brutal crime spree orchestrated by two men, Douglas Edward Gretzler and Willie Luther Steelman. Unrein, along with his companion Michael Adshade, became victims of these men on October 18, 1973.
Their encounter with the killers was driven by the perpetrators' need for a vehicle and their ruthless determination to eliminate any potential witnesses to their escalating crimes.
The abduction of Unrein and Adshade was a calculated move by Gretzler and Steelman to continue their deadly journey. After taking the two young men captive, the killers drove them to a remote location. There, in a cold and merciless act, both Unrein and Adshade were murdered, their bodies left discarded as their assailants fled in their stolen vehicle. The motive was starkly clear: robbery and the chilling desire to erase any trace of their identities as they moved from one crime to the next, leaving a trail of terror in their wake.
The reign of terror conducted by Gretzler and Steelman eventually came to an end with their capture on November 8, 1973. The subsequent investigation unraveled the full extent of their gruesome activities, linking them to a multitude of murders across Arizona and California. Both men were brought to justice for their heinous acts. Douglas Gretzler was ultimately sentenced to death and was executed in 1998 for his role in the murders. His accomplice, Willie Luther Steelman, also received a death sentence but died in prison from illness in 1986, closing the final chapter on a crime spree that claimed the lives of many, including the senseless and tragic death of Kenneth Unrein.
