On the warm evening of July 17, 2021, a celebration turned into a tragedy at a home in Mesa, Arizona. Jaime Fernandez Jr., a 24-year-old Hispanic man, was at his mother's house near 88th Street and University Drive, where his family had gathered for his birthday and to watch a Phoenix Suns playoff game. The festive atmosphere was shattered at approximately 10:00 p.m. when gunshots rang out.
