On the evening of March 30, 2021, a dispute in a parking lot in Mesa, Arizona, turned fatal, ending the life of 23-year-old Ronnie Teran. The male victim was found with gunshot wounds around 7:45 p.m. near 8th Avenue and Country Club Drive and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities later determined that the shooting stemmed from an argument over drugs and money.
Teran, who was soon to be a father, was remembered as a hardworking young man who was protective of his siblings and excited about his own growing family.
The investigation quickly led Mesa police officers to a person of interest, who was located at a local motel. Law enforcement attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying the person of interest, who was the girlfriend of the suspect, and two men. The car refused to stop, leading police on a short chase that ended when the fleeing vehicle crashed into a detective's car in a Tempe alleyway. An officer sustained minor injuries in the collision, and all three occupants of the suspect vehicle were taken into custody.
One of the men arrested was identified as 31-year-old Jamar Johnson. During his interview with police, Johnson allegedly confessed to shooting Ronnie Teran. He reportedly told investigators that he fled from them because he feared being caught with the murder weapon. A gun was later recovered by officers in the alley where the chase concluded. Following his confession, Johnson was arrested and faced several felony charges, including one count of second-degree murder.
