In the early days of Mesa, Arizona, a dedicated lawman named Hyram Smith Peterson served as the Town Marshal, a position he held with commitment for five years. At the age of 53, the male marshal was a familiar and respected figure in the community he had sworn to protect. His life, however, was cut tragically short on November 12, 1913, in a violent encounter that would mark him as the first law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty in the city's history.
