On a Sunday evening in Mesa, Arizona, a dispute that began over money escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving one man dead. Al-Hajjii Khaliph-Jamez Brooks, a 42-year-old male, was shot and killed on February 19, 2023, in the parking lot of a bar and grill located near Country Club Drive and Brown Road. The incident stemmed from an argument over an unpaid debt.
According to witnesses, the conflict started inside the restaurant and continued as Brooks walked towards his car in the
parking lot. At that point, the suspect allegedly followed him and opened fire. The man accused of the crime is 35-year-old Darren Wayne Harper Jr.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched which led to the arrest of Harper three days later. While in custody, Harper reportedly admitted to being at the restaurant and engaging in a financial dispute with Brooks, but he denied being the person who shot him. The argument was allegedly over money that Brooks owed to Harper's girlfriend.
Harper was subsequently booked into the Maricopa County jail, facing charges related to the death of Al-Hajjii Brooks. The community was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a man over what has been described as a monetary disagreement.
