On February 8, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred on Tucson's west side, resulting in the death of 39-year-old Mario Peter Vega. Vega was shot shortly before 1:40 a.m. and was subsequently dropped off at St. Mary's Hospital, located at West Saint Mary's Road and North Silverbell Road.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Tucson Police Department (TPD) officers made contact with the person who drove Vega to the medical facility. Despite medical efforts, Vega succumbed to his injuries.
