In the summer of 1992, a grim discovery was made in a desert area on the east side of Tucson, Arizona, forever altering the lives of many. On June 13, the body of 18-year-old Jennifer 'Jenny' Geuder was found by a jogger; she had been shot six times in the head. The preceding evening, Jennifer, a young mother, had gone out with her boyfriend, Jose Luna, and his acquaintance, Donald Miller.
This outing, however, was a deceptive prelude to a tragic and calculated act of violence.
Unbeknownst to Jennifer, Luna had enlisted Miller's help in a plot to end her life. The motive behind this conspiracy was a demand for child support for their 13-month-old son. The evening began with a trip to a drive-in movie, after which the three made a stop to pick up Miller's handgun. They then drove to Mount Lemmon, a scenic mountain range overlooking the city. It was there that Luna shot Jennifer once in the back of the head.
Despite the grievous injury, Jennifer survived the initial shot. In a desperate struggle for her life, she attempted to hide under a car. Her fight for survival was ultimately in vain. Luna and Miller then drove her back to the desert area where her body would later be discovered. There, Miller shot her five more times in the head, sealing her fate.
In the aftermath of the brutal murder, both perpetrators were apprehended and brought to justice. Jose Luna pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to a term of 39 years to life in prison. Donald Miller was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. After spending seven years on death row, Donald Miller was executed by lethal injection on November 8, 2000. Jennifer's untimely death was a profound loss for her family and friends, who remembered her as a loving mother, daughter, sister, and friend.
