In the pre-dawn hours of May 20, 2025, the quiet hum of an idling car on the side of the road near Irving and Woodland streets in Manchester, Connecticut, drew the attention of local authorities. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered the unresponsive body of 24-year-old Jordan Patterson, a Black/African American male from Windsor Locks. First responders were dispatched to the scene just before 4 a.m. and attempted to perform life-saving measures, but their efforts were in vain.
Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his torso. The office of the chief medical examiner would later rule his death a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting death of Jordan Patterson led Manchester police on a comprehensive search for a suspect. Information extracted from Patterson's phone indicated that the fatal encounter had been arranged as a marijuana deal. Scrutinizing surveillance footage from the area, detectives noticed a figure wearing distinctive sneakers with prominent reflective elements walking to and from the scene of the crime. This crucial piece of evidence pointed them toward a nearby residence on Irving Street. The investigation culminated in the identification of a suspect, 16-year-old Zion Smith of Manchester.
Following the issuance of an extraditable arrest warrant, authorities tracked Zion Smith to Alabama. He was apprehended and extradited back to Connecticut to face charges. A search of the home Smith shared with his mother uncovered a pair of Jordan Air 5 Retro OG-style sneakers that were identical to those worn by the individual captured in the surveillance footage. Smith was subsequently charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence, carrying a dangerous weapon, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was transported to Hartford Juvenile Detention to await his court appearance.
