In the late hours of a September evening in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of a young Black man, 20-year-old Derrick Hayes Jr., was tragically cut short. On September 3, 2022, police were called to the area near 52nd and Boyd Streets, where they discovered Hayes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

For months, the investigation into the shooting continued, a period of uncertainty for those who knew and loved Derrick. Then, in June of the following year, a breakthrough was announced. Omaha police arrested 19-year-old Marsavion Watson in connection with the homicide that had occurred nearly ten months prior. Watson was subsequently booked on serious charges: first-degree murder and the use of a weapon to commit a felony.
