In the late hours of a September evening in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of a young Black man, 20-year-old Derrick Hayes Jr., was tragically cut short. On September 3, 2022, police were called to the area near 52nd and Boyd Streets, where they discovered Hayes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
