In the early morning hours of March 27, 2021, in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of 27-year-old Loklok W. Thok, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire near the intersection of 24th and Emmet streets. Another man, 24-year-old Duop Tang Deng, was also killed in the shooting. When Omaha police officers responded to a call about the shooting at 2:56 a.m., they found a grim scene.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Nebraska Medical Center.
The investigation into the double homicide moved swiftly. A few days later, on March 29, the Omaha Police Department announced the arrest of 24-year-old Mabior Mabior of Omaha. He was taken into custody and booked into Douglas County Corrections, facing two counts of criminal homicide and two counts of using a gun to commit a felony. The motive for the shooting, according to court documents, appeared to stem from an ongoing dispute between Mabior and Thok. During an interview with police, Mabior acknowledged a history of conflict with Thok, even referencing a previous incident in Dallas, Texas, in 2019 where Thok had been shot.
As the investigation continued, a second arrest was made. On March 31, police arrested 24-year-old Nyamal Both, also of Omaha. Both was taken into custody on suspicion of being an accessory to the crime. While authorities did not release specific details about her alleged involvement, her arrest added another layer to the tragic events that unfolded on that late March morning. The case against Mabior Mabior proceeded through the legal system, with prosecutors pointing to the history of animosity between him and Loklok Thok as a key factor in the deadly shooting.
