In the quiet community of Laurel, Delaware, the life of a young Black / African American man, Kyle Lee Newman, was tragically cut short at the age of 21. On Saturday, January 5, 2013, a senseless act of violence ended the life of a man remembered for his kind and generous heart.
The evening turned tragic when two to three masked individuals forced their way into a residence on Horsey and Everett Road in Laurel. Their demands for money and drugs shattered the peace of the home.
In the ensuing chaos, Kyle attempted to flee the terrifying situation. It was then that he was shot multiple times by the intruders.
Despite the immediate response of law enforcement, the suspects managed to escape and have not yet been brought to justice. The Delaware State Police continue to investigate the case, which is now considered a cold case. They urge anyone with information to come forward.
Kyle, born on April 23, 1991, was a graduate of the Indian River School District, where he had been a part of the Junior ROTC program. He was known for his easy-going nature, his love of laughter, and a smile described as beautiful and contagious. He had a passion for writing his own raps and making music. He leaves behind a grieving family, including a son, his parents, and a twin sister, who remember him as a fun-loving person who brought joy to those around him. His untimely death left a void in the lives of his family and friends and a community still waiting for answers.
