Jahyeim Davis, also memorialized as Jahy-Eim Jimenez Smith Davis, was a 23-year-old Black male from Seaford, Delaware, whose life ended after gunfire broke out in Laurel on Monday, June 3, 2024. In the early morning hours, around 1:22 a.m., Laurel Police and Delaware State Police were called to Little Creek Apartments, at or near the 400 building, after reports of a large crowd and shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Davis behind the 400 building suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The shooting appeared to erupt out of a chaotic gathering rather than a quiet, isolated encounter. Delaware State Police later summarized that Davis had been at the location with a large crowd when several fights broke out and shots were fired. A second person was also struck; local reporting said one wounded person went to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while Davis was transported from the scene and did not survive.
Investigators said the preliminary evidence pointed to an unknown suspect or suspects firing multiple shots into the area where the crowd had gathered. Those bullets hit the two victims and also struck vehicles and buildings, turning the apartment complex into both a crime scene and a witness scene. The Laurel Police Department requested that the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit take over the investigation because of the nature of the case.
Davis was publicly identified by Delaware State Police on June 11, 2024. The agency said the Homicide Unit was still actively investigating and asked anyone with information to contact Detective M. Csapo or provide a tip through Delaware Crime Stoppers. A later Delaware State Police unsolved homicide case flyer still described the case as one in which shots were fired during fights in a large crowd and did not list any named suspect, arrest, charge, trial, or conviction. Based on the available online sources reviewed, no arrests have been publicly reported, and the suspect or suspects have not been publicly identified.
