On Memorial Day, May 26, 2014, in Camden-Wyoming, Delaware, Charles W. Semans, 84, male, White, was shot during a domestic argument with his 17-year-old grandson, John Rash, at a home in the 7000 block of Willow Grove Road around 6:20 p.m. Investigators said Rash retrieved a shotgun and fired once, striking his grandfather in the abdomen. Troopers and medics responded, and Semans was rushed to Christiana Hospital.
Semans did not survive; he died on Thursday, May 29, 2014, and an autopsy attributed his death to a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. In the immediate aftermath, Rash was taken into custody and charged with assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and was held on $40,000 secured bond while detectives continued their investigation.
Weeks later, prosecutors dismissed the case against Rash, dropping the charges that had followed his grandfather’s death. Authorities did not pursue additional suspects, and reporting at the time did not identify anyone else as being involved in the shooting beyond the grandson first detained.
