Albert K. “Kenny” Hazzard Jr., a 33-year-old Black man from Wilmington, Delaware, was killed during the early morning hours of September 28, 2017. Shortly after midnight, Wilmington police were sent to the Brandywine Hills Apartments in the 4300 block of Miller Road after someone reported an idling vehicle in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they found that the car had slowly coasted into another parked vehicle.
Hazzard was slumped in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was reported injured.
Investigators determined that Hazzard had been shot once while inside the vehicle, but publicly available reports did not describe what led to the shooting, whether anyone had been seen approaching or leaving the car, or whether anything had been taken. The circumstances left police with a homicide scene but no publicly identified assailant. Hazzard, who was known to family and friends as Kenny, had been born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Virginia and later settled in Delaware. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lynchburg College, was married and was the father of two children. Accounts published after his death described him as quiet and noted that he had worked as an Amazon associate.
No arrest was announced in the immediate aftermath of the killing, and available reporting does not identify a named suspect, person of interest, criminal charge, trial or conviction connected to Hazzard’s death. The case was later assigned to the Wilmington Police Department’s Cold Case Unit and remained unsolved when authorities renewed their request for information in 2023. Investigators continued asking anyone with knowledge of the shooting, the events surrounding the idling car or the identity of the person responsible to come forward.
