On August 31, 2021, at approximately 10:30 p.m., New Castle County police officers responded to reports of gunshots in the 100 block of Freedom Trail within the Saddlebrook Townhouses community in New Castle, Delaware. Upon arrival, they discovered 38-year-old Ernest Saunders Staples lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite immediate first-aid efforts, Staples was pronounced dead at the scene.
