Ernest Staples, a 38-year-old Black male, was found mortally wounded late on August 31, 2021, in the Saddlebrook Townhouses community near the 100 block of Freedom Trail in New Castle, Delaware. Patrol officers responding around 10:30 p.m. discovered him lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. They administered first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene as detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police took over the case.
