Aaizeem Korden-Brown, a 17-year-old Black male from New Castle, Delaware, was killed in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 20, 2023, after gunfire broke out during an unsanctioned car meet in New Castle County. Delaware State Police said troopers were called shortly after 2:00 a.m. to the Delaware Logistics Center on Bear Corbitt Road, where a large crowd had gathered for the meet-up.
What began as a late-night gathering of cars and people turned chaotic as a fight or argument developed among several people in the crowd.
According to police accounts, Aaizeem and a 21-year-old friend became involved in an argument with unknown individuals as the car meet was breaking up. During the confrontation, someone opened fire into the crowd. Aaizeem was struck multiple times. His friend was also shot, suffering a wound to the foot, but survived and was listed in stable condition. Aaizeem was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting sent the crowd scattering from the area. Police said the unknown suspect or suspects fled after the gunfire, leaving investigators with a scene that had quickly emptied out despite the large number of people who had been present moments earlier. Delaware State Police later described the case as a homicide investigation and said the incident occurred during a car meet that had not been authorized. In the days after the killing, Aaizeem’s family publicly pleaded for witnesses to come forward. His mother, Rita Korden, described the pain of losing her only child and said she wanted peace of mind knowing justice would be served. His father, Shawn Brown, addressed the person responsible by saying they had taken something that could not be replaced. Police also appealed directly to the people who had attended the car meet, stressing that investigators wanted videos, witness accounts, and any details that could help identify who fired the shots.
