Emmitt Martin-Brown was a 25-year-old Black man whose life ended during a violent intrusion at his Dover home on the night of August 18, 2016. At approximately 9:34 p.m., police were sent to an apartment in the 100 block of South Queen Street after receiving a report that someone had been shot. When officers entered the residence, they found Martin-Brown suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
The officers immediately began providing first aid while emergency medical personnel prepared to transport him to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.
The shooting was not initially described as a random attack. Investigators determined that several people had allegedly entered Martin-Brown’s apartment without permission with the intention of committing a robbery. Once the intruders were inside, multiple gunshots were exchanged between members of the group and people occupying the residence. During the burst of gunfire, Martin-Brown was struck. Authorities reported that he appeared to have been unintentionally hit during the exchange, but the wound proved fatal. The confrontation turned what had begun as an alleged armed home invasion into a homicide investigation.
Within days, detectives identified Quashaun Christy as one of the suspected participants. Christy, then 22, was taken into custody by Philadelphia police on August 23, 2016, at the request of the Dover Police Department. He remained held in Pennsylvania while authorities began the process of returning him to Delaware. Police indicated that other unidentified suspects had also participated in entering the apartment and attempting the robbery, but the available public reports did not identify those individuals by name.
After his anticipated extradition, Christy was expected to face charges of home invasion, first-degree robbery and first-degree conspiracy. Authorities also said charges of reckless endangering and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony were pending through a separate indictment. Memorial messages described him as a kind and thoughtful person, a devoted father who loved his children, and someone remembered for his bright smile. Former teachers and school officials recalled him warmly, including an educator who remembered his willingness to help others while working at the hospital and a former principal who described him as one of his favorite students. His celebration of life was held on August 26, 2016, at Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover.
Publicly accessible reports confirm Christy’s arrest and the charges authorities planned to pursue, but they do not clearly document the final disposition of the prosecution, any trial verdict, plea agreement or sentence. They also do not establish that the remaining unidentified participants were arrested. As a result, the known record leaves the case with an arrest connected to the fatal home invasion, while the eventual outcome of that prosecution and the identities of the other alleged intruders remain unclear.
