In the early evening of October 28, 2024, the life of 31-year-old Edgar Ismael Cando, a male resident of Portland, Maine, was tragically cut short. At approximately 5:29 p.m., Portland police were dispatched to the vicinity of Portland and Alder Streets following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Cando suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Maine Medical Center, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. A little over three hours after the incident, authorities arrested 21-year-old Omar Abd Elkader of Portland. He was taken into custody at the Portland Police Department and has since been charged with murder. Elkader was subsequently transported to the Cumberland County Jail, where he is being held. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation by the Portland Police Department.
Edgar Cando is remembered by his family for his kind spirit, resilience, and compassion. He is survived by his son, Giovanni, as well as his parents, siblings, and nieces. His family expressed that his influence will be felt for years to come. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of his death and have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
