Do you know who murdered Frank Williams? In the pre-dawn hours of August 16, 2008, a 37-year-old Caucasian male named Frank Williams was in the Kennedy Park neighborhood of Portland, Maine. An altercation erupted between Williams and a large group of men, the catalyst for what would become a fatal encounter. The confrontation escalated, and Williams was chased onto the Fox Street soccer field. There, in the middle of the field, the group brutally beat and stabbed him multiple times before fleeing.
Williams, a father of two, succumbed to his injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide.
For fifteen years, the case of Frank Williams' murder remained unsolved, one of many cold cases in the Portland Police Department's files. Investigators believed that numerous individuals were present during the attack and likely held key information about what transpired. As the years passed, Frank's family continued to hope for justice, his father expressing a desire to see someone held responsible for his son's death. In an effort to generate new leads, the FBI offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
A significant breakthrough in the long-dormant case finally came in late 2023. A grand jury indicted two men, 36-year-old Shane Hall and 30-year-old Khang Tran, on murder charges in connection with Williams' death. Both men were already incarcerated for unrelated crimes at the time of the indictments. Later, in a subsequent court proceeding, Shane Hall pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter for his role in the attack and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. While authorities have not ruled out the involvement of others, the indictment and subsequent plea brought a measure of closure to a family that had waited over a decade for answers.
