On the night of May 25, 2015, a promising young life was tragically cut short in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine. Treyjon Dominique Lee Arsenault, a 19-year-old male, was fatally shot at Da Block Studios, a local recording studio. A recent graduate of Westbrook High School, where he had been the captain of the football team, Arsenault was remembered as a respectful and well-mannered young man with a passion for sports.
He was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire of a dispute that did not involve him.
The events that led to Arsenault's death began with an argument between Gang Deng Majok, 30, and another individual. The altercation escalated, and gunfire erupted inside the studio. Arsenault was struck and fatally wounded. Another man, Mohamed Ali, 21, was also shot but survived his injuries. The shooting was the tragic culmination of a pre-existing conflict between the shooter and the other victim.
In the aftermath of the shooting, two suspects, Gang Deng Majok and his associate, Johnny Ouch, 20, fled the scene. However, law enforcement quickly identified them, and in July 2015, both were apprehended. Ouch was the first to be arrested and was charged with murder and elevated aggravated assault. Later that same month, Majok was also arrested on similar charges. The arrests brought a sense of relief to a community shaken by the senseless violence.
The legal process that followed saw both men held accountable for their actions. In March 2017, Gang Deng Majok pleaded guilty to the murder of Treyjon Arsenault and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Johnny Ouch pleaded guilty to felony assault. The conclusion of the legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to Arsenault's grieving family and friends, though the pain of his loss remains. His death serves as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of violence on innocent lives.
