On a summer evening in Portland, Maine, on June 24, 1997, a confrontation that began in a bar tragically escalated, ending the life of 24-year-old Dana G. Matthews, a White / Caucasian male, and two other men. The dispute involved Matthews, Nicholas Patenaude, and Kevin Pinette, who had engaged in a heated argument with local bar owner Sabato Raia earlier in the evening.
This initial conflict did not dissipate and later moved to the street in front of Raia's apartment building.
The simmering tensions from the bar reignited, and the verbal altercation turned violent. In the ensuing chaos, Sabato Raia fatally shot all three men, including Dana G. Matthews. Each of the victims sustained gunshot wounds to the head, their lives abruptly cut short in the street. The incident, which resulted in a triple slaying, sent shockwaves through the Portland community and set the stage for a contentious legal battle.
Following the shooting, Sabato Raia was arrested and charged with murder for the deaths of Matthews, Patenaude, and Pinette. During his trial, Raia did not deny firing the fatal shots but mounted a defense centered on the claim that he acted in self-defense. He asserted that he believed his life was in imminent danger during the confrontation with the three men. The jury ultimately acquitted Raia of the murder charges. However, in subsequent civil proceedings related to Raia's homeowner's insurance policy, it was determined that while Raia may have subjectively believed he was in danger, that belief was not reasonable.
