Do you know who murdered Anthony Goldsberry? In the late hours of a Friday night in Northeast Washington, a young man's life was cut short in a sudden burst of violence. Twenty-two-year-old Anthony Goldsberry was gathered with several other people in the 4500 block of Quarles Street NE on January 27, 2006, when a silver-colored vehicle drove by. Unseen occupants from within the car opened fire on the group, striking Goldsberry and an 18-year-old man.
The street, located within the Kenilworth Courts public housing complex, was
thrown into chaos. Goldsberry, who lived on that same block, was grievously wounded. He was rushed to Prince George's Hospital Center, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at 12:31 a.m. the following morning. The other young man, struck in the back, was fortunate to survive after being treated at a hospital and released. A man from the neighborhood, who remembered coaching a younger Goldsberry on the Kenilworth Steelers youth football team, expressed his shock and sorrow at the news, a painful reminder of a life lost.
In the aftermath, homicide detectives canvassed the area, searching for clues and a motive behind the deadly shooting. Sixth District commanders increased police presence, stationing a patrol car in front of the building where the shooting occurred and setting up a tower of high-powered spotlights to illuminate the night. Despite these efforts and a reward of up to $25,000 for information, authorities did not immediately identify any suspects and made no arrests in the drive-by shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department continued to seek the public's assistance in gathering information regarding the unsolved homicide of the man also known as 'Black'.
Another man named Anthony Goldsberry also met a tragic end in Washington, D.C. years earlier. On the night of May 5, 1997, the 42-year-old was discovered lying in a rear alley in the 1600 block of 16th Street SE. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was transported to D.C. General Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and died around 1 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 1997. At the time of the initial reports, police had not made any arrests in connection with his death.
