On the evening of September 18, 2021, 17-year-old Brayan Villatoro, a male from Washington, D.C., was fatally shot in an alley in the Brightwood neighborhood. That night, Villatoro was riding with friends to a family party when he asked to be dropped off on Nicholson Street Northwest to meet someone. After getting out of the vehicle, he was met by a man who arrived in a stolen car and led him into a nearby alley. Moments later, multiple gunshots were fired. Villatoro's friends, who were waiting for him, fled the scene after hearing the shots.
Responding officers found Villatoro in the alley, having been shot eight times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed pointed to Mussay Rezene, then 31, as the primary suspect. Investigators used surveillance footage that captured Rezene wearing distinctive clothing and shoes. This evidence was corroborated by a photo posted on social media after the murder, which showed Rezene wearing the same shoes.
Furthermore, cell phone data placed Rezene at the scene of the crime and along the route the stolen vehicle took. Police believe the meeting between Rezene and Villatoro was for a drug transaction. Court documents described Villatoro as a member of a gang called “Street Thug Criminals,” and police stated the gang was involved in internal disputes as well as conflicts with other crews.
Mussay Rezene was arrested on January 19, 2022. During his trial, prosecutors presented evidence that included conversations between Rezene and Villatoro about drugs and guns. Rezene was found guilty of first-degree murder while armed in January 2024. In March 2024, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of Brayan Villatoro. Prosecutors described Rezene as a 'vicious, violent man' with a significant criminal history. At the time of Villatoro's murder trial, Rezene was also facing charges in a separate triple homicide and the fatal stabbing of another inmate while incarcerated.
