On September 18, 2018, 40-year-old LaKendrick J. Thornton of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was fatally shot in a vehicle during an argument. His body was discovered the following morning in a ditch near Renner, South Dakota, with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Authorities arrested 29-year-old Henry Long and 23-year-old Kelsey Roubideaux in connection with Thornton's death. Long was charged with second-degree murder, while Roubideaux faced charges of first-degree manslaughter.
