In the winter of 2015 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a dispute between teenagers culminated in a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 18-year-old Anthony Lee Gabriel, a Caucasian male. The tragic events unfolded on the evening of Thursday, January 29, 2015, following a heated argument.
The conflict, reportedly fueled by ongoing tensions over girlfriends, escalated into a dangerous car chase through the city streets.
Gabriel was driving his vehicle with a 20-year-old woman and her five-month-old infant as passengers. As they were pursued, multiple shots were fired at Gabriel's car near the Empire Mall on Louise Avenue. One of the bullets struck Gabriel in the head, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The female passenger managed to safely bring the car to a stop and contact the authorities.
Anthony Lee Gabriel was rushed to Sanford Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He remained on life support for several days before succumbing to his wounds on Sunday, February 1, 2015. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
Following an investigation, police identified two suspects: 19-year-old Robert Edward Montes and 17-year-old Connor Bryon Hanson. The two were apprehended in Marshall, Minnesota, the day after the shooting. Initially facing charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder, these were upgraded to first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and first-degree manslaughter following Gabriel's death. Authorities indicated that there was a history of animosity between the suspects and Gabriel, stemming from relationship issues. It was also reported that the infant in Gabriel's car was the child of his girlfriend and one of the suspects, Connor Hanson. Both Montes and Hanson were extradited to Minnehaha County to face legal proceedings for their involvement in the death of Anthony Lee Gabriel.
