In the early morning of March 25, 2023, a 44-year-old Native American male, Derek Redstar Pappan, was in his single-wide trailer south of Riverton on the Wind River Indian Reservation when a neighbor entered and shot him in the back of the head.

A woman inside the home told investigators that she and the 44-year-old male were looking for a phone charger around 5:30 a.m. when the shooter came through the door and fired immediately.
