On September 13, 2023, in Douglas, Wyoming, 38-year-old Nicholas Michael Velazquez was fatally shot by his cousin, Mark Coleman Helms, during a night of drinking at Helms' residence. Helms, 43, later claimed to have blacked out during the incident, stating that his memory lapsed and he only recalled performing CPR on Velazquez afterward. However, he also admitted to firing the gun, expressing fear and uncertainty about who he was shooting at.
