On January 29, 1958, 34-year-old traveling shoe salesman Merle Delore Collison was resting in his Buick along a highway near Douglas, Wyoming. Charles Starkweather, accompanied by his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, approached Collison's vehicle with the intent to steal it. When Collison resisted, Starkweather fatally shot him multiple times.
