Frederick James Bacolini, a 77-year-old man, died on April 14, 2020, after a shooting inside the home where he lived in the Nāpili area near Lahaina, Maui. That Tuesday night, just after 8:00 p.m., an argument erupted between Bacolini and his housemate, and people nearby reported hearing the confrontation intensify right up to the moment a single shot rang out. When officers arrived, Bacolini was found suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was treated at the scene before being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.
Investigators quickly focused on the man who had been arguing with him: John Lyons Jr. Police said Lyons came out of the residence and was detained without further incident that night, and he was arrested as the case was opened as a homicide investigation.
