In the dark hours before dawn on May 21, 2022, the quiet roads of Nānāwale Estates in Puna were broken by a call for help. Just before 3:00 a.m., patrol officers were sent to the intersection of Nānāwale Boulevard and Seaview Road after a report that someone had been shot. When they arrived, they found Junio Resun, a 36-year-old Native Hawaiian man, lying in the roadway as family members gathered around him in shock.
