On June 3, 1905, Officer Will G. Jackson of the Troy Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a man who had reportedly failed to pay his street tax. During the confrontation, the suspect shot Officer Jackson in the chest, near where his badge was pinned over his heart. Despite his critical injury, Officer Jackson managed to return fire, wounding the suspect in the arm. Tragically, Officer Jackson succumbed to his injuries approximately 20 minutes later.
